How to permanently change YouTube video quality

Stop adjusting YouTube settings for each video. Here's how to permanently set video quality on desktop and mobile.

When watching a YouTube video, the network connection automatically determines the default video quality. But did you know that you can change the quality of a YouTube video so that it looks better or to save data?

How to permanently change YouTube video quality

Instead of changing this setting for each video, we'll show you how to permanently set the quality of a YouTube video for both mobile and desktop.

What are the YouTube video quality options?
In April 2021, YouTube modified how video quality settings work on Android and iOS. Now, you can set a default video quality when your device is connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.

There are four different options for YouTube video quality:

Auto, which changes video quality depending on current network conditions, screen size, and quality of the original video.
Higher image quality, which shows you videos in 720p or higher and uses more data.
Data saver, which shows you low quality videos but is handy if you want to save data.
Advanced, which allows you to select a specific video quality. It's the only option that lets you do that.

If you notice that the video quality is not consistent from one video to another, then you are currently using the Auto option. How much data YouTube consumes depends on your streaming quality.

Keep in mind that you will never be able to watch a video in a higher resolution than it was uploaded in. For example, if a 480p video is uploaded, it cannot be viewed in 720p or 1080p.

It is inconvenient to change these quality settings for each video, so now we will show how to set the quality permanently on mobile and desktop. It is one of the many tricks you should use on YouTube.

How to permanently adjust YouTube video quality on your phone
On mobile, you can select a permanent video quality option via YouTube using the available video quality settings. Here's how:

Launch the YouTube app and click your account display picture on the top right.
Select Settings.
Click Video Quality Preferences. Next, if you are using iOS, you need to select On mobile networks or On Wi-Fi on the next page.
Under Video Quality on Mobile/Wi-Fi, select either Higher Image Quality or Data Saver.

One thing you will notice is that there is no option to select a specific video resolution. To do this, you must select the advanced option, which is only available during video playback.

To do this, follow these steps:

Play any video on the YouTube mobile app.
Click anywhere in the video player window.
Click on the three dots or the gear icon at the top right.
Select Quality and tap Advanced from the popup.
Click on a specific video quality. The video will start playing with the selected video quality.

Keep in mind that the options available will depend on the original quality of the uploaded video. Also, this setting is not permanent. It will change as soon as you move to another video.

How to permanently adjust YouTube video quality on PC

On the desktop, there is no official way to set the default video quality. Fortunately, various browser extensions can help you set a permanent video quality via YouTube on your desktop.

Adjust YouTube video quality on Chrome browser
Go to Auto Quality for YouTube in the Chrome Web Store.
Click on Add to Chrome and click on Add extension from the popup.
Go to YouTube via your browser.
Click the Auto Quality for YouTube icon in the browser extension menu.
Select the dropdown menu next to Default quality and choose the preferred quality for YouTube videos.
Click Save to finish. Update YouTube so that your preferred quality settings take effect.

Adjust YouTube video quality on Chrome browser
Go to the YouTube High Definition extension for Firefox.
Tap Add to Firefox, then select Add from the popup. Select Allow this extension to run in private Windows if you wish, then click OK.
Go to YouTube and play any video.
Click the YouTube High Definition icon in the upper-right corner.
Use the Video Quality dropdown menu and select your preferred video quality. The extension will immediately load your preferred quality.
Remember, if you set a default quality for a YouTube video and this option isn't available for the video you're watching, these browser extensions will select the highest available quality setting. While you can watch a 1440p video on a 1080p screen, you have to beware of the various things that happen when you do this.
